Recording Equipment: tools of the trade

Author: Aliceshown

Recording equipment is a must have for a budding music artist. By listening to his/her music repeatedly, the artist can realize his/her flaws, and can work actively towards ironing out the kinks in skill. The quality of recording equipment matters quite a lot in the making of an artist these days. Proper equipment can make even Average Joe sound like George Michael. Before getting the rigs, however, it is important to know the significance of each piece of equipment. Here are the basics:

1. Microphone: A high quality microphone may burn a hole in the wallet, but is generally the best investment for a budding musician. Vocalist or instrument player, all artists need good microphones to record their music better. Microphone must be of a good brand. It is also better to go for microphones with replacement warranties, since these do tend to get heated a lot, and take some punishment. And no, getting headphones with built in microphones is not a good idea. The headphone might be very good, but the microphones attached with headphones are usually flimsy in construction and do not last for long. It is best to get a separate microphone.

2. Pre-amplifier: A pre-amp is a must-have if a person is serious about composing and recording music. The pre-amplifier increases the pitch of the sound before it is fed into the main amplifier. What results is a rich sound with sufficiently high pitch which can be recorded with very satisfying results. A good pre-amp is an expensive investment, but if it can be afforded, it is advised to go for it. Otherwise, a great microphone with average pre-amp is also a good combination.

3. Headphones: These are the second best set of equipments for an artist. Headphones come in handy when an artist listens to his/her own music to spot the flaws. These need to be of good quality, and preferably branded, so as to provide good sound reproduction.

4. Compressor and equalizer: These two are important pieces of gear, especially if you play music. These can help you to alter the pitch and volume of the music at will to suit the vocals. Equalizer can also help in correcting minor discrepancies present in composed music, before the final recording takes place. It is wise to invest on good gear here, especially if the focus of the composition is on the music score.

These are the basic recording equipments that can help a budding artist improve his/her skills during the earlier stages of learning.

Whether you're looking to record your band's first album or just map out your song compositions, World Music Supply can hook you up. We offer recording equipment like multi track & portable recorders, studio monitors & tapes at best rates.
